A Glossary of Sudoku Terms

Sudoku has a whole raft of terms associated with it that it helps to understand when discussing techniques for solving them. There are lots of different terms for the same thing, but don't worry, there are plenty of different words for rain but we get the hang of them in the end!

For a visual cue to some of these words, please refer to our Map.

Term Description

Block

A term often used to refer to the smaller grids of cells found within the larger grid. See also Subgrid.

Box Yet another term for what we choose to call a Subgrid

Candidate Cell(s)

The Candidate Cells are the possible locations where a particular value might be placed.

Candidate Column(s)

When considering a particular value, the Candidate Columns are those Columns in which a value could possibly be located (often used in more advanced solving techniques like Block Interaction).

Candidate Row(s)

When considering a particular value, the Candidate Rows are those Rows in which a value could possibly be located (often used in more advanced solving techniques like Block Interaction).

Candidate Value(s)

When considering a particular cell, the candidate values are those values that might be possible to be placed in the cell. These are often represented by Pencil Marks.

Cell

A cell is the smallest unit in a Sudoku puzzle / grid. See the map.

Column

A vertical line of cells See the map..

Given A Cell that is set with a Value as part of a puzzle.

Grid

Another name for the whole sudoku puzzle - standard Sudoku being based on a grid of 9x9 cells.

Pencil Marks

Marks in a Cell used to indicate the Candidate Values for that cell.

Region

Sometimes used as an alternative term for Subgrid, however, we prefer to use the word Region to indicate any one of Column, Row or Subgrid.

Row

A horizontal line of Cells. See the map.

Square Another term for Cell, or the smallest 'square' unit in a puzzle.

Subgrid

The smaller grids that appear within the puzzle as a whole. In a standard Sudoku puzzle, the grids are 3x3 cells. See the map.

Symbol

Another word to refer to the Value(s) that might be placed in a cell. As some puzzles use letters instead of numbers, referring to them as symbols makes sense (in our opinion).

Value

Typically, one of the digits 1-9, to be placed in each Cell of the puzzle. However, not all puzzles use the digits 1-9, so we sometimes use the term Symbol.
